Nest Boxes – Giving Garden Birds a Safe Place to Call Home

A garden isn’t just a place for plants to thrive—it can be a lifeline for local wildlife too.

One of the simplest and most rewarding ways to support birds is by installing nest boxes.  At Burston Garden Centre, we’re passionate about helping you turn your outdoor space into a safe haven for wildlife and nest boxes are a brilliant place to start.

Why Nest Boxes Matter

In the wild, birds naturally nest in holes in trees, old walls and roof spaces. Sadly, modern building methods and tidier gardens mean these natural nesting sites are becoming harder to find. Nest boxes help bridge that gap, offering birds a secure place to raise their young, sheltered from predators and harsh weather.

By putting up a nest box, you’re not only supporting bird populations—you’ll also enjoy the magic of watching birds visit your garden year after year.

Choosing the Right Nest Box

Different birds have different needs, so choosing the right nest box is important:

  • Small hole boxes are ideal for blue tits, great tits, sparrows and nuthatches.           The size of the entrance hole helps keep larger predators out.
  • Open-fronted boxes suit robins, wrens and wagtails, who prefer easy access and a more open nesting space.
  • Specialist boxes are available for species like owls, swifts and even bats.

Our team is always happy to help you pick the perfect box for the birds in your area.

Where and When to Put Up a Nest Box

Nest boxes can be put up at any time of year, but autumn and winter are ideal. This gives birds time to find and inspect them before the breeding season begins in spring.

Position your nest box:

  • At least 2–4 metres off the ground
  • Facing north or east, away from strong sun and rain
  • On a tree, wall or fence, out of reach of predators

Try to avoid busy feeding areas to give nesting birds some peace and quiet.

Caring for Your Nest Box

Once breeding season is over (usually late summer), it’s a good idea to clean out nest boxes. Remove old nesting material and rinse with boiling water—no chemicals needed. This helps prevent parasites and keeps the box fresh for next year’s residents.
