Colour, Growth & Summer Preparation

June is one of the most rewarding months in the garden. Longer days, warmer temperatures and regular growth mean borders begin to burst with colour, vegetable plots become productive and outdoor spaces truly come to life. It’s also the perfect time to enjoy your garden while staying on top of essential maintenance that keeps everything thriving through summer.

At Burston Garden Centre, June is all about helping gardeners make the most of the season with expert advice, and inspiration for every outdoor space.

Make the Most of Flowering Borders

Early summer borders are often at their peak during June. roses, lupins, foxgloves, delphiniums and peonies create beautiful displays and benefit from regular deadheading to encourage continued flowering.

Support taller plants before they become top-heavy and damaged by wind or rain. Feeding flowering plants with a high-potash fertiliser such as Vitafeed Flower and Fruit Feed will also help prolong blooms throughout the season.

Container gardens will need daily watering during warmer spells, especially hanging baskets and patio pots. Water thoroughly in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation and keep plants healthy.

Lawn Care for a Greener Summer

Lawns grow rapidly in June and regular mowing helps maintain a lush appearance. Raise mower blades slightly during dry weather to avoid stressing the grass and leaving brown patches.

If weeds or moss are becoming a problem, early summer is a good time to treat them while conditions are still moist. Treat weeds by hand-pulling or using a lawn-safe weed killer and treat moss by scarifying the lawn, improving drainage and applying moss control products if needed.

Newly laid turf and recently seeded areas should be watered consistently during dry periods.

Time to Plant Summer Vegetables

June is ideal for planting and maintaining productive vegetable gardens. Tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, beans and sweetcorn all thrive as temperatures rise.

Remember to:

  • Tie in tomatoes regularly
  • Pinch outside shoots on cordon varieties such as Sungold F1, Shirley F1, Gardeners Delight, Crimson Crush F1, San Morzano and Black Cherry
  • Keep crops well-watered
  • Harvest salad leaves, little and often

Herbs such as basil, mint and parsley also flourish now and are perfect for containers close to the kitchen door.

Watch for Pests and Diseases

Warm weather increases the activity of aphids and slugs, as well as fungal diseases. Check plants regularly so problems can be dealt with early before they spread.

Encouraging wildlife into the garden can help create natural balance. Birds, hedgehogs and beneficial insects all play an important role in pest control. Adding pollinator-friendly plants also supports bees and butterflies throughout summer.

Enjoy Your Outdoor Space

June is the perfect month to spend more time outdoors. Refresh patios with colourful containers, add solar lighting for evening enjoyment and create relaxing seating areas surrounded by scent and colour.

Whether you’re planting up baskets, growing your own vegetables or simply enjoying your garden in full bloom, June offers endless opportunities to get outside and enjoy.
