Keep your indoor jungle thriving this summer

While August is a wonderful time to enjoy the garden, it’s also an important month for caring for your houseplants. Longer days, warmer temperatures and brighter light mean many indoor plants are still actively growing and will appreciate a little extra attention before autumn arrives.

Water wisely

The warmer weather means houseplants often need watering more frequently, but it’s important not to overdo it. Always check the compost with your finger before watering, if the top couple of centimetres are dry it’s usually time for a drink. Empty any excess water from saucers or decorative pots to prevent roots from sitting in water.

Feed for healthy growth

Many houseplants are still producing fresh leaves throughout August. Continue feeding every couple of weeks with a balanced liquid houseplant feed by Westland to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

Make the most of the light

As the days slowly begin to shorten, ensure your plants are receiving enough natural light. Clean dust from leaves so they can absorb as much sunlight as possible and rotate pots every few weeks to encourage even growth.

Keep an eye out for pests

Warm conditions can attract pests such as spider mites, aphids and mealybugs. Regularly inspect leaves, especially the undersides, and deal with any problems early before they spread. Zero In Plant Remedy Insect Control Bug Soap Spray provides an effective way to tackle infestations and help keep plants healthy.

Increase humidity

Some tropical houseplants, including Calatheas, Monsteras and ferns, appreciate a little extra humidity during warm spells. Grouping plants together or placing them on a tray of damp pebbles can help create a more comfortable environment.

Thinking about repotting?

If roots are growing through the drainage holes or your plant dries out unusually quickly, it may be ready for a larger pot. August is still a good time to repot many houseplants before growth begins to slow later in the season.

A healthy houseplant doesn’t just look good—it helps create a happier, greener home all year round.
