Plant Seeds - Kids Corner Blog - Burston Garden Centre

If you’re keen on getting your kids into growing their own food, then this is a really simple way to do it. If kids have sewn their own seeds, watered them and watched the shoots pop through, they’ll be much more likely to want to eat it! Regardless if it seems too “healthy”!

To get started you will need the following equipment;

  • A small seed tray (or a pot!)

  • Small bag of multi-purpose compost

  • A watering can

  • Salad seeds (try rocket seeds and purple basil/ lettuce seeds)

Instructions

  • Step One: Fill your seed tray with compost. Press the compost down, so it’s nice and firm.

  • Step Two: Mark out your name in the compost using a stick.

  • Step Three: Sow the rocket seeds along the letters of your name in the compost.

  • Step Four: Next, sow a border around the name using the purple basil or lettuce seeds. Make sure to leave about 5cm between the letters of your name and the border.

  • Step Five: Sprinkle fine soil or compost over the seeds. Tip – Be gentle so you don’t move the seeds.

  • Step Six: Water your tray using the watering can. Tip – Be gentle and make sure the watering can has a rose (sprinkler) in the spout so you don’t wash the seeds out of place.

  • Step Six: Put the seed tray on your window sill or outside in your garden or balcony. Clip your name as it grows and enjoy eating it!
