As November settles in, it’s time to prepare your garden for the colder months ahead.
While many plants are going into their dormant phase, there’s still plenty to do to ensure your garden remains vibrant and welcoming.
November is a great month for trimming back apple and pear trees, as well as lifting and dividing herbaceous perennials. This not only helps maintain the health of your plants but also encourages new growth when spring arrives.
For those tender plants that need extra care during winter, consider moving them into a greenhouse or cover them with horticultural fleece. Plants like Fuchsias and Cannas benefit from being kept in a light position, with just enough moisture to keep them dormant.
Wildlife
Your garden can be a haven for wildlife, even in November. Consider planting trees and shrubs that provide food and shelter for birds during the winter months. Species like Sorbus (Rowan) and Malus (Crab Apple) are excellent choices, offering both berries and protective branches.
Additionally, setting up bird feeders filled with seeds and fat balls can attract various species throughout the winter. Remember to leave some areas of your garden wild; log piles and unkempt corners can provide essential habitats for hedgehogs, frogs, and beneficial to insects.
